The Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing at a roadside police checkpoint in Dera Ismail Khan that killed at least 11 people and wounded about 30 others on Saturday, the group said in a statement. The claim is the new development in the attack reported earlier today.

A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle at the checkpoint in the district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, in northwestern Pakistan, police and rescue officials said. Bilal Faizi, a spokesman for the provincial emergency service, said the dead and wounded were being taken to a nearby hospital, with some of the injured in critical condition.

Pakistan has experienced a surge in militant attacks in recent years, many of them claimed by the TTP and the outlawed Baloch Liberation Army, a separatist group mainly active in neighbouring Balochistan province. The TTP is separate from but allied with the Afghan Taliban, which returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021.
