All-rounder Will Jacks starred with bat and ball as England beat Sri Lanka by 89 runs in the first one-day international at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

England, having won the toss and elected to bat on a slow surface, were bowled out for 265 in 48.1 overs. Captain Harry Brook top-scored with 67 from 69 balls, while Jacks struck an unbeaten 46 from 47. Debutant Sri Lanka leg-spinner Sachindu Colombage, 28, impressed with 3-44, dismissing Joe Root for 44 and Jos Buttler for 31, while Asitha Fernando took 3-53.

Sri Lanka never got going in reply, limping to 176 all out in 37 overs. Jacks’s off-spin ripped through the middle order — 5-22 from seven overs, his career best and his maiden five-wicket haul at this level. It was the second-best ODI figures by an England spinner, behind only Vic Marks’s 5-20 against New Zealand in 1984. Captain Kusal Mendis made 42 and Dunith Wellalage a brisk 45, but three wickets in a single Jacks over ended the game.

Jacks was named player of the match. “It wasn’t the easiest of surfaces but we want to be a team that can adapt to conditions,” Brook told Sky Sports, calling Jacks “an outstanding player”.

England, who have now won five of their last six ODIs, head to Headingley for the second game on Thursday as they build towards next year’s 50-over World Cup in southern Africa.
