Arsenal shelve Emirates Stadium expansion after two-year review, opt for 'continued evolution'

Arsenal have ruled out a significant expansion of Emirates Stadium, ending around two years of internal work on how to raise the ground’s capacity beyond 70,000.

The decision was communicated to supporters at the first Arsenal Advisory Board meeting of the 2026/27 season on September 24, attended by co-chairman Josh Kroenke and chief executive officer Richard Garlick. The club told members it was committed to a “continued evolution” of Emirates Stadium rather than a “huge-scale masterplan”, for cost and logistical reasons.

The 60,700-capacity stadium, opened in 2006, was the biggest Premier League ground in London when Arsenal left Highbury, but has since been surpassed by Tottenham Hotspur’s 62,850-capacity stadium, which also hosts NFL games and concerts. Any major works could have required a temporary move to an alternative home such as Wembley, a disruption manager Mikel Arteta did not want for his team, talkSPORT reported.

Instead the club will build on recent improvements: a new catering partnership, safe standing introduced in the Clock End this season and extended to 6,650 seats in the North Bank next season, upgraded hospitality and retail, and better 5G mobile coverage inside the stadium.
