Peter Byrne, the singer who co-founded 1980s synth-pop duo Naked Eyes, has died aged 74.

A press release announcing his death said Byrne “died peacefully in Los Angeles on Monday, Sept. 14, after a brief illness”, Ultimate Classic Rock reported.

Byrne formed Naked Eyes in 1982 with keyboardist Rob Fisher. The duo’s first hit, a synth-pop reworking of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s “Always Something There to Remind Me”, reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983. They went on to score three more US top-40 hits — “Promises, Promises”, “When the Lights Go Out” and “(What) In the Name of Love” (MNPR Magazine, Wikipedia).

Before Naked Eyes, Byrne and Fisher played in the short-lived band Neon alongside Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, who later formed Tears for Fears. Fisher died in 1999, aged 42, after surgery for cancer.

Byrne released a solo album, The Real Illusion, in 2001, reformed Naked Eyes in 2005 and released Disguise the Limit in 2021.

Born on 9 June 1952, Byrne kept writing, recording and touring for more than four decades.
